Do Salt Lamps Bring Benefits?

Salt lamps have become popular around the world because many consider them to promote wellness. They are classified as “natural ionizers”, that is, they have the ability to change the electrical charge of the surrounding air, thus improving its quality.

They are natural rocks that have their origin in the Himalayas. It is formed from different minerals: red, yellow or white clay lick; but also lithium, halite and selenite. One of its great attractions (within the decorative field) is that none have the same shape or size.

According to Feng Shui experts, these lamps are responsible for maintaining harmony in the home, as they invite a state of relaxation, thus helping to reduce stress and improve rest, especially during the night hours.

Although scientific evidence is required to support their effects, there are those who suggest that these lamps can produce ions, attracting water particles that evaporate, such as a salt solution when heated with a lamp. This mostly forms the negative ions to which its benefit is attributed.

  • They improve the quality of oxygen.
  • They prevent nasal congestion problems, since the lamps “trap” the ions that are harmful to health.

  • Reduce the discomfort derived from allergies (since “they help eliminate dust particles, bacteria, spores and other harmful elements”).

Other claims, not scientifically proven

The discharge of negative ions allows the production of serotonin, the hormone responsible for happiness and well-being , to rise. Therefore, it is said that salt lamps help people to have a good, relaxed mood and also a better ability to concentrate.

If you have respiratory problems, suffer from allergies or any other discomfort, it is best to go to your doctor for advice and an appropriate treatment. Avoid resorting to self-medication, as well as natural remedies and products (such as salt lamps) that do not have solid support from the scientific community, as you could put your health at risk.

If you dare to incorporate salt lamps in your home, keep in mind that they will only be useful in terms of decoration, not as elements capable of preventing or treating diseases.
